So you may be asking yourself "Why should I vote for San Diego to host Convergence 11?" Well, that's a good question and we are going to do our best to try to answer it in such a way as to entice you to vote for our proposal.
The people behind the effort to bring Convergence 11 to San Diego believe that we can put on an event that will be greatly enjoyed as it happens and fondly remembered for a long time to come. Many of us have attended several incarnations of Convergence and three of us have been directly and intimately involved in organizing two past Convergence events. We believe we have the experience, the motivation and the imagination to bring this together and make it well worth attending. We know how much hard work goes into this event and we have been making plans and working to bring it to fruition for a long time. There is still more work to do to create the best event we can possibly provide and we will continue working toward that goal. We love our city and think it is a beautiful and unique place to hold Convergence. As a major tourist destination, it holds many things to do and plenty of good places to eat and shop. Yes, we know that Convergence is about coming together with one's on-line friends but who says we can't do that in style in a beautiful city? Just think of all the fun you can have dressed to the nines in your best Goth finery while checking out the World Famous San Diego Zoo or when strolling through the museums and plazas of Balboa Park...
We have gone to great lengths to secure a wonderful hotel that will be very nearly all our own if we manage to sell out our reserved block of rooms. (If we try hard, we can take over the entire hotel...) We are focusing the majority of events at the hotel and plan to have a number of choices of things to do during each day. Our hotel is right on the waterfront and will likely enjoy perfect, mild weather on the weekend of the event. As an added bonus, we have already signed a contract with the hotel that locks in the date of the event and the room rates for Convergence attendees. There will be no surprises regarding the hotel, we are saving the surprises for the fun part of the program.
Each year since around C3, Convergence has had a theme associated with the event. We hope that our theme will appeal to everyone and we heartily encourage everyone to dress the part and have fun with it. (And if you don't have fun with it, we might just make you walk the plank). We are planning to secure prizes to give away throughout the weekend and will have a theme costume contest and various other activities where attendees can win something cool to take home with them.
Most of all, we want to throw a party. We want that party to be something that you want to come to. We have been talking to many people about this event to learn what it is they want from Convergence and we are going to try in the best way we can to bring those things to fruition. Most of us have been to other Convergence events and we know that the party is about the people who go to see their friends from far away. We want to drop everyone into a fun environment where you and your friends can make your own memories, renew your ties and leave looking forward to the party for next year, wherever it may be.
