By Air

Being a popular vacation destination for many people, San Diego is an easy destination to get to and air fares are often very reasonable. There are many direct flights to San Diego's conveniently located international airport from most major U.S. cities. Flights from many more cities, both domestic and international, connect to San Diego through one or more major hub airports. By careful shopping, it is often possible to get a round trip flight to San Diego for under $300 US. In some instances, it is possible to purchase a flight ticket for under $200 US if flying from a major hub airport. Of course we do not set the fares and your actual cost may vary depending on current available fares.

The San Diego committee intends to negotiate with at least one of the major U.S. airlines for an event airfare discount. We can't yet promise if we can do this or how much the discount would be, but we are certainly going to try to get the best deal we can.

Shuttle Information

Getting from the Lindbergh Field International Airport to the hotel is simple. Between the hours of 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM, the Shelter Pointe hotel operates a complimentary shuttle van to and from the airport. Guests must contact the attendant at the shuttle pickup area outside each terminal to call the hotel to have the van pick them up.

For those arriving outside of the hours the hotel operates its van, we recommend using our preferred airport shuttle company Cloud 9 Shuttle. Cloud 9 will provide a safe, affordable and fast trip from the airport to the hotel and back again when you are ready to depart. The fare for a shared shuttle van between the hotel and the airport is a low $6.50 per person one-way. Round trip tickets may be purchased at the time of pickup or you may make a reservation and purchase your ticket online at Cloud 9's web site.

By Train

Those coming from the Los Angeles metropolitan area and further north in California have affordable travel options via rail on Amtrak. There are 12 daily arrivals into Downtown San Diego for as low as $26 US one way from Santa Barbara on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner.

Getting from the train station to the hotel is simple and affordable using either the hotel shuttle or another shuttle service. Please see the shuttle information above in the air travel section for more details.

By Car

Driving is definitely an option for many people and getting to the hotel is very easy from either the Interstate 5 or Interstate 8 freeways. Please see the Map of the hotel location to get specific directions from your starting point.

From Interstate 5 Southbound or Interstate 8:
  • Exit at Rosecrans Street (State Route 209)
  • Head Southwest on Rosecrans until you come to Shelter Island Drive
  • Turn left on Shelter Island Drive and follow it all the way to the West end of the island (bear to the right at the traffic circle)
  • The hotel is located just before the park at the very end of the island
From Interstate 5 Northbound:
  • Exit at Pacific Highway
  • Turn left at Barnett Avenue
  • Barnett Avenue will turn into Lytton Street at a bend to the right approximately 3/4 of a mile from Pacific Highway
  • Turn left onto Rosecrans Street (State Route 209)
  • Head Southwest on Rosecrans until you come to Shelter Island Drive
  • Turn left on Shelter Island Drive and follow it all the way to the West end of the island (bear to the right at the traffic circle)
  • The hotel is located just before the park at the very end of the island

Parking at the hotel is $10 per day. The parking lot has plenty of parking and is patrolled 24 hours a day by hotel security personnel.

By Bus

The Greyhound Bus terminal is located in Downtown San Diego at the corner of Broadway and First Street.

Getting from the bus terminal to the hotel is simple and affordable using either the hotel shuttle or another shuttle service. Please see the shuttle information above in the air travel section for more details.

Around Town

The committee will be arranging transportation for all official events that are held off of the official hotel property. This transportation will be via clean, modern busses and will be an affordable add-on ticket that attendees may purchase if they so desire. We highly recommend using this service to avoid hassles with parking and the dangers of drinking and driving.

There are several options for getting around town once you have arrived. Most flexible would be a rental car. There are a number of car rental companies located close to the airport including all of the major national companies and several discount rental firms.

Public transportation is available though not recommended for anyone in a hurry to get somewhere. It has the advantage of being relatively cheap but not nearly as flexible or fast as some other options. The major exception to this rule is for those who wish to visit Tijuana. The Trolley Blue Line is one of the best ways to get to the border where you can then walk across and catch a Tijuana Taxi to take you to the Downtown shopping area.

Taxis are good for short trips within the city but be certain you know how far you need to go before climbing in one. Taxi fares can get pretty steep because San Diego is a very large city. We recommend limiting taxi trips to under five miles or so and sharing cabs with others whenever possible to help minimize the individual cost.

For groups wishing to make trips to specific locations, we recommend using our official shuttle van company Cloud 9 Shuttle. They can provide affordable transportation for small groups of people from the hotel to just about any destination in San Diego County. Be sure to reserve your van as early as possible to ensure availability.
