The City:
San Francisco, the city by the bay, or as it is
sometimes called Baghdad by
the Bay, has a wealth of Culture and Nightlife.
It caters to a wide range of
tourists and interests. The city of rolling fog
and hills. Mark Twain once said
"The coldest Winter I ever spent was a Summer in
San Francisco" and what can be
better for Velvets?
San Francisco offers the following, which are
all easily accessable by Bus or
BART:
Shopping:
Japan Town for Anime and other Japanese "Toys."
China Town for Cheap Shoes, Mandarin
Jackets/Dresses and other Chinese goods.
The Metreon featuring the Where the Wild Things
Are store (There is also a Wild
Things Maze for those with children. And no I am
sorry to say the young at
heart don't count.), Anime's on DVD, a
Playstation Store,
a Microsoft Store, a Virtual Reality Arcade and
(For those truly sick) a Dance,
Dance Revolution Machine.
The famous Haight Street which, unfortunately, is
not so Goth themed anymore but
there are still gems to be found such as
Secondhand stores, Used records
(Rasputin's and Ameba), a John Fluvog Store, good
Cafes and the infamous DalJeets.
San Francisco is home to some of the best in
corset and fetish items. Such as
DarkGarden.com, StormyLeather.com,
GoodVibrations.com and Leather, Etc.
Castro Street is always a fun excersion. While
not goth it does have dark gems
here and there and, well, just the experience is
worth the time.
San Francisco is also heavenly for the
seamstresses of alt.gothic.fashion.
Britex at Union Square is pricey but worth it,
SOMA has many Fabric stores that
can be touch and go, and many more are scattered
throughout the city.
For the craft minded, General Bead in SOMA will
try your patience but worth the
effort for the mind-blowing amount of beads.
Valencia Street has good shopping as well.
Another DalJets (Which is better
stocked as less people go there), more second
hand stores (There's even one that
sells the clothing by the pound.), more used
record stores, and We Be Sushi
(One of the best Sushi restraints in S.F.).
Justa cross the bay is Berkeley's Telegraph
Avenue. Think of it as a Haight
Street from about 10 years or so ago. Secondhand
clothing stores (Do you think
we have enough of these?), Used record stores
(Again Rasputin's and Ameba),
Smoke shops, good Cafes and other stores that are
just hard to describe but,
none the less, have good stuff. Best yet it is
Easily accessible by BART.
S.F. also offers several Museums:
The Museum of Modern Art
Palace of the Legion of Honor, featuring permanen
exhibitions of Rodin, several
of the Dutch Masters, and a verity of marble
sculptures.
The Exploratorium
The California Academy of Sciences and
Planetarium/Lasarium show
The Ansel Adams Gallery
San Francisco also has unique Bars that we all
recommend:
Hobson's Choice, which features a Victoria themed
atmosphere.
The Pied Piper Bar (Which has an original
painting done by ol' Maxfield Parish
himself) at the Palace Hotel.
Vesuvio Cafe - home of the original beat
generation, requires a visit if for no
other reason then the Beardsley-esk Stained glass
on their facade.
Annie's, (the Voodoos fav bar) Annie is a BIG fan
of the Damned and X, bartender
Tess is a Sisters o Mercy junkie, the Jukebox is
filled to the brim with
Deathrock, Punk and Swing. Plus it's right
across the street from S.F.'s
Courthouse, so if you get in trouble you can
arrange Bail and get a drink!
Café de Nord is another of our bars, which
feature a Victorian theme and has
the definite feel of a Speak Easy. Best yet, it
has Chartreuse!
Lucky 13. Their logo is a Black Cat. Need we say
more?
Late Nite Restaraunts:
Contray to popolar
conception, San Francisco offers a
vairety of choice for after-club Dining:
Cafe Mason 320 Mason St.
Bagdad Cafe 2295 Market St
A little on the "healthy" side, but still a great
24 hour dinner even for burger
lovers. A long standing favorite. Pretty much
across the street from Café du
Nord and Lucky 13, (see the bars section)Very
conveniently located just down
Market street from SOMA. (Short ride on an all
night bus line or a cheap cab
fare)
Denny's 816 Mission,495 Beach St.1700 Post St.
that classic freak hangout. The one on Mission
Street (2 doors down from HOV) in
SOMA is weird. It's upscale. Really nice and
decorated in a tasteful modern
way. The bathrooms are really cool. You wouldn't
know take it for a Denny's
except for the menus and the food.
Lori's Diner 336 Mason St
Lucky Penny Restaurant 2670 Geary Blvd.
Mel's Drive-in 4th & Mission. 165 Lombard St.
3355 Geary Blvd. O'Farrell & Van
Ness Ave.
Classic Americana Drive in. Only open until 3am
but across the street from one
of our favorite venues.
Orphan Andy's 3991 17th St. Ste A
Sparky's 24 Hour Diner 242 Church St.
Just around the corner from Baghdad. Classic
dinner ambience hour.
International House-pancakes 2299 Lombard St
King Diner 1390 Mission St.
Pine Crest Restaurant 401 Geary St
Silver Restaurant 737 Washington St
Other sites Sites of interest:
Ocean Beach, somehow this beach always makes us
think of Emile Bronte.
The Cliffhouse, which has an Arcade Museum
featuring arcade machines from the
turn of the century and one Giant creepy
animatronic, Sutro Baths, and Sutro
Heights, which has a fantastic view of Ocean
Beach.
Pier 39, The Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum,
the Wax Museum, the Torture
Museum (Oh Tee-Hee *Whack*Whack*). Right around
the corner is Fisherman's
Warf, which is always fun for scaring the shit
out of the Normals that are
touring. Also from here you can catch boat tours
around the Bay and to
Alcatraz.
