Le Nil Bleu
3706 St Denis
(514) 285-4628
An Ethiopian restaurant in the Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood. One of the few African restaurants in town, Le Nil Bleu is a pleasant trip away from the bustle of the city. Dimly lit, the low ceilings and cozy decor offer a comfortable atmosphere to relax and enjoy a leisurely meal. The food itself is served on a communal bed of pancake-like bread and eaten without utensils. The dishes themselves range from vegetarian plates to meat dishes and are spiced, although far from spicy. Service is fair, but slow. This is not the place to go for a quick bite. Expect the meal to last several hours and you won't be dissapointed. Prices are medium, although I found the portions on the small side.

The food is typically Belgian and exquisitely prepared. From the Moules & Frites (fries and mussels) to the Onion Soup au Gratin (french onion soup), to the Chocolate Mousse and Dame Blanche au Chocolat (ice cream with chocolate sauce), everything is prepared wonderfully. The ambiance is pleasant and relaxed, and the service is friendly and professional although often a little relaxed as well. Prices are moderate, and well worth it. Highly recommended.

They offer a wider array of bagels such as olive pesto or whole wheat. They have a smaller variety of accessories to go with your bagel, although they still carry the mandatory cream cheese and lox. The bagel mecca of Montréal. Located in the Plateau Mont-Royal, St.Viatur bagel makes (arguably) the best bagels in the known universe. Put in the bag fresh from the oven, there is a cetain magic to the bagels that come out of this small little store-front. Wall fridges hold such delicacies as cream-cheese (I recommend Astro brand), Lox (smoked salmon), Capers, and various spreads such as humous and baba ganouj as well as cold beverages like Snapple and Tropicana. Preferences vary between the various bagel establishments, some people prefering to buy inferior bagels at places like Real Bagel or Fairmount bagel (I must admit a certain bias, and thus my comments should be taken with a nice warm St. Viatur bagel). Bagels come in sesame seed or poppy varieties. I'm sure Johnny would agree that St. Viatur makes as tasty a bagel as Hell does. Very strongly recommended.

The deep mahogany decor, with large booths, a sidewalk terrace and good food. The portions are always generous and the quality of food is above average. The service is friendly and accomodating, the menu is large and varied, and the atmosphere is comfortable in an understated way. Often booked for parties that take up the whole of the restaurant (which is not difficult since the place holds perhaps ten for fifteen tables) Kalinka has a delicious, if somewhat limited menu. The authentic Russian dishes are perfectly done and are a treat to anyone with an appreciation for different cuisine. Suggested dishes are the Veal Rasputin (a veal stew with vegetables and prunes covered with melted cheese) and the Fish A La Moscou (a fish casserole with potatoes, mushroomes, sour cream, and cheese). Their borsht is also excellent, and the Napoleon Cake (a sort of Russian version of a Mille Feuilles) is simply decadent. With simple but tasty food that reminds one of home cooking this is a great place to come for a nice long and relaxing evening with friends. Their borsht is served clear (without cabbage or dumplings as is often done in Russian or East European cuisine) but is exquisite nonetheless, and their perogies are undeniably wonderful. My only complaint was that the portions were on the small side, although at their prices it would be affordable to order a second plate if you were still hungry and be paying as much or less as you might elsewhere for a single dish.

Located right downtown within crawling distance of Les Foufounes Électriques, La Belle Province is a far cry from haute cuisine. One of Montréal's local fast-food franchised restaurants, La Belle Province serves up surprisingly acceptable burgers, fries, steamies, and of course poutine. Since my experiences at La Belle Province have mainly been at around three in the morning once the bars have closed I must admit to a certain bias regarding the restaurant. The burgers are good, the steamies are acceptable, but most importantly, their poutine is perfect. The fries are greasy, but done right. The menu is quite varied and all of the dishes are excellent and well presented. Servings are large and the waiters are all exceptionally nice. Every meal includes a shot of apple Schnapps (which lacks the sickly sweetness of other Schnapps) and occasionally the restaurant offers some interesting dishes not normally on the menu (I had the distinct pleasure of trying a Cordon Vert, or schnitzel stuffed with cheese and asparagus, which was completely delightful). Suggestions include the Serbian soup (a sort of thin chili with a bit of bite to it), the escargots (served piping hot with tons of garlic and with roughly twice as many escargots as other restaurants serve... truly a pleasure for the snail lover), and the Cordon Rouge (Schnitzel stuffed with cheese and mushrooms). A Brazilian restaurant located right in the heart of downtown Montréal, Le Milsa is not you average restaurant. Firstly, their menu only features three options, and two of the options are more-or-less standard choices (roast quail and a fish dish of some sort). The primary choice, which has been interestingly called "The Turnstile", is the house specialty. The customer is served the expected starters (salad, some marinated mushrooms, pickles, etc) and then, every ten minutes or so, the waiters bring one of ten different types of meat, straight from their wood grill. They continue to bring different types of meat until the customer asks them to stop. They claim they will feed you until you beg them to stop, although I never actually had to beg. Perhaps I'm just exceptionally persuasive. The quality is excellent, and the service is friendly yet very professional. Strongly recommended.

Puca Puca
5400 St Laurent

Located on the Plateau Mont-Royal not far from St. Viatur Bagel and Fairmount bagel, this inexpensive little Peruvian restaurant boasts that it is "the place for the Peruvian food". While the menu lacks some variety it makes up for it with a consistant quality in the dishes they serve. Their fish and seafood dishes are especially good, and they are one of the few restuarants that I've been to that serve Inca Cola. Recommended.
Prices range from $10-$20 per person.

La Raclette
1059 Gilford
(514) 524-8118
This charming establishment, located at the corner of Gilford and Christophe-Colomb in the
Plateau, is one of my favourites. One of the few good restaurants that specializes in Swiss cuisine, and other European specialities. The raclette entrée is a must for cheese lovers. Be sure to bring a bottle of nice wine to accompany your meal. Yes, that's right! You get to bring your own, so you're not being overcharged for your alcohol. You may want to make a reservation if you are going on the weekend, as it is often busy.
Prices range from $15-$30 per person.

Pho Bang New York
970 St Laurent
(514) 954-2032
This small Vietnamese restaurant on the corner of Viger and St. Laurent in
Chinatown serves up arguably the best tonkinese soup in the city. With truly astounding quantities (the extra large tonkinese soup is roughly the size of a small baby bath). Although they specialize in tonkinese soup they offer a wide variety of Vietnamese dishes sure to please. If you're in the mood for a tonkinese soup (or are wondering what it is) this is the place to go.
