![]() Downtown Hochelaga-Maisonneuve The Latin Quarter Mount Royal Area Old Montréal and the Old Port Plateau Mont Royal The Underground City The Village ![]() Chinatown is located betweeen the Old Port and the downtown area, mostly along La Gauchetière St near Saint-Laurent Blvd. It is full of restaurants and markets and the streets are always busy. Downtown Downtown is considered to be Sainte-Catherines St. The main street of the city, it is lined with shops, restaurants and department stores. Smoked meat fans take note - just one block north of Sainte-Catherine, at the corner of Metcalfe and De Maisonneuve, is Ben's, a 24-hour 50's style deli that serves smoked meat sandwiches, the best latkes ever, and Good Old Pickles. Hochelaga-Maisonneuve In the eastern part of the city, Hochelaga-Maisonneuve is the home of the Olympic Park, the Biodôme, the Botannical Garden, the Insectarium and the Château Dufresne. Noted for its Beaux-Arts style buildings and converted factories, it is one of the most popular areas for visitors to the city. The Latin Quarter Named after the language of classical education, the Latin Quarter contains most of the city's universities, libraries and theatres. It has traditionally been considered the Intellectual, artistic and cultural centre of Montréal. Little Italy Around the Jean-Talon metro station. Montréal's Italian population is one of the city's largest ethnic groups, and Little Italy is full of traditional markets and colourful cafés and shops. Mount Royal Area The mountain that gives the city its name, Mount Royal is the site of numerous parks and two of the city's largest and most beautiful cemetaries. A preserved part of Montréal's past, visitors can wander the cobblestone streets or take a buggy ride past cafés, boutiques and museums that are housed in the original buildings of the era. Plateau Mont Royal Due to its location adjacent to the Latin Quarter, the plateau has become a trendy urban neighbourhood full of bars, cafés and restaurants. The Underground City The Underground City is a network of pedestrian walkways, shops, restaurants, theatres and plazas that exist under the streets of downtown Montréal, which means that you don't have to risk ruining your hair and make-up by going outside when it's raining. Covering almost 4 square kilometres (approximately 3 square miles), it is linked by nine Metro (subway) stations as well as commuter trains and buses. The Village The gay village stretches along Sainte-Catherines St. between Saint-Hubert St and Papineau. Montréal is a very queer-friendly city, and the Village is a large area with busy shops and a very active nightlife.
