Welcome to Pittsburgh, PA!

More than just abandoned steel mills, rivers, and the Greater International Airport, Pittsburgh is also home to many respected educational institutions, medical facilities, pierogies, Polka, and some incredible architecture (such as the Pittsburgh Plate Glass building).

We hope that in browsing this site and Pittsburgh's bid to host Convergence, you will find more to see and do in "da 'Burgh" than you may have originally thought.

Where?

Pittsburgh is located in the south western section of Pennsylvania, where the Monongahela and the Allegheny rivers meet to form the Ohio. In fact, Pittsburgh is right here.

Why Pittsburgh?

There are many reasons to visit Pittsburgh. We've tried to list as many as possible under the Attractions section, but here is a sample of what our city has to offer:
• Good public transit system
• An industrial history
Museums, art galleries , and amazing architecture
• Easy travel to/from other major East Coast cities by car or bus
• Easy travel to/from almost all major cities by air. (PGIA - PIT is a major US Airways hub.
• Low cost of living
• Low crime rate - click here to compare crime stats for 2 cities.
June 16, 1995: City rated 7th best among 44 in crime
"Pittsburgh had the seventh-lowest crime rate of 44 major U.S. cities last year, according to statistics to be published later this year in the FBI's 1994 Uniform Crime Reports."
               --Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

• Pleasant weather during spring/early summer - historical weather record for PGH
• Undergoing a cultural renaissance and is widely recognized for nascent high-tech industry - like an emerging Silicon Valley without the exorbitant cost of living!

To help introduce us and our city, we've put together a list of the Top Ten Goth/Industrial Reasons to visit Pittsburgh with the help of #pghgoth on EFNet.

The G/I Top Ten Reasons for Visiting Pittsburgh

10. George Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead was filmed here, as well as Robocop.
9. Fascinating locals like the sombrero guy, the homeless transvestite, the blind street singer, Arvin, and Spaz.
8. According to rumor, it's where The Raphrat had his first intimate experience with Sarah Michelle Gellar.
7. Subterranean tunnels under the campus of CMU home to legendary beasts, much like you'd find in Arkham, MA.
6. Tom Savini. Yes, we said Tom Savini.
5. More dead people than live. At least, we have lots of sp00ky cemeteries.
4. Abandoned steel mills are GAF.
3. The modern gothic architecture of the Cathedral of Learning.
2. Actually, that should have been Uri Geller, not Sarah Michelle.

And the number one G/I reason to visit Pittsburgh is:
1. We have the most bridges to jump from.

How much?

Not including tee shirts, we expect that the base price for C7 registration in Pittsburgh will be around $20 USD. This would include all events except the
Gateway Clipper Cruise ($15 USD), Kennywood ($10 USD), and our C7 banquet, the Hunger ($12 USD).

The primary choice for the C7 hotel in Pittburgh is the Wyndham Garden hotel in Oakland, for which we would be able to get double occupancy rooms for $80 a night.

Pittsburgh's cost of living index is around 109 (100 being the average city), which puts us around 10 points lower than almost all major metropolitan areas.

Average Prices (in USD) for Essential Items:
McDonald's Big Mactm Extra Value Meal - $3.49
Yellow Cab ride (5mi) - $8.80
Pack of clove cigarettes - $4.18
Fifth of Smirnoff - $11.99
Maybelline black liquid eyeliner - $6.00
