One official outing we are planning is a guided tour
of one of Detroits oldest historic cemeteries,
Woodmere Cemetery,
with a tour guide who does cemetery tours dressed up in victorian garb.
So wear your best (and bring your camera!) for this one!
Tickets will cost $5 per person, paid cash directly to the tour guide on the day of the tour, but individuals wishing to attend must RSVP in advance to reserve a seat on the bus! Transportation to the cemetary, and from the cemetary to the Victorian Tea, will be provided.
Victorian Tea 1:30pm
No Convergence would be complete without a tea party! We have
made arrangements
with an historic restaurant, with a rather
nefarious history, that regularly hosts tea socials.
This eatery
is called
The Whitney,
and is housed in a converted victorian era mansion.
At least three deaths occurred in this house before
being made into a restaurant,
and it is reputed to be haunted.
Where else would be so fitting for a gothic tea-party?
But if
tea is not to your taste, you can go upstairs to the “Ghost Bar”
for a cocktail.
You may even be lucky enough to meet one of the
house’s original inhabitants!
Tickets will be $35 per person and must be purchased in advance.
(Check our Tickets page for links!)
Kid's T-shirt Workshop - 1:00pm in the Rotunda Room. Local artist and goth-father Greg Horvath will be leading this workshop, where registered "Baby Bats" will have the opportunity to paint their own custom Convergence XXIV t-shirt. Materials fees include all necessary supplies. Register for all kid's events Here.
Kid's Movie Night/Parents' Night Out!- 8pm in Goth Mom's "gothspitality" suite. (Age apporpriate movies will be selected/announced after parents register their kids so we know age ranges of attendees.) Register for all kid's events Here.

Exploring Detroit!
If the Whitney is not enough for you, there are many other restaurants, inns and taverns in Detroit that have been adapted from centuries old historic houses, missions, and other old buildings. In once case, the restaurant was actually built on the site of an old grave yard. These places offer fine dining, the staff will love to talk to you about the location’s histories, and yes..several are reputed to be haunted as well!
Detroit boasts some very old architecture, including neoclassical and French gothic cathedrals. Additionally, some of the oldest cemeteries in the state of Michigan are located in Detroit. They are rich with history, gothic sculpture and architecture. These historic burial places can be visited and toured. Information on these churches and cemeteries will be made readily available to guests, and a guided tour is being planned as a semi-formal event activity.
Shopping!
Want to go home with some new Goth-wear, books, or other dark trinkets? Detroit offers alternative friendly shopping opportunities. One notable example is Noir Leather, a mere 20 minutes from the hotel. There is also John K. King bookstore, the largest used and rare bookstore in the U.S.
Bacchanalian Delights!
Another informal outing will be to the Two James Distillery. This is the oldest distillery in Detroit and dates to the end of prohibition. The Two James prides its-self on it’s crafted spirits, offers tours of its historic facility, and has a tasting room where guests can sample their crafted spirits. This includes Nain Rouge Absinthe Verte, this distillery’s very own brand of the Green Fairy for your enjoyment!
In addition to the dark attractions, Detroit also has many amenities that appeal to tourists of every kind. These include fine dinning restaurants, that would make for excellent Corp-Goth dinner outings. The Detroit Art Museum, Museum of Science, and Historical Museum are all very popular.
A complete list of shopping attractions, restaurants and other touristy places will be made available to attendees.
Children’s Programming
Wait what??? Children’s activities at Convergence? That’s right. Many of us Elder Goths have kids of our own, and we know how hard it is to do Goth stuff when you can’t bring the family. For this reason, we will have a staffed room at the hotel dedicated to fun stuff for the little ones. While this will not be a round the clock baby sitting service, it will offer designated times where the kids can come and be supervised as they watch movies, work on crafty things, or read and be read to. This, and the other activities for children, will not only allow parents some time to do adult stuff, but will also let the young ones make new friends, and take home some good memories.
The Illusionists
This mind blowing spectacular showcases the jaw dropping talents of five of the
most incredible illusionists on earth.
THE ILLUSIONISTS – Live From Broadway has
shattered box office records across the globe and dazzles audiences
of all ages
with a powerful mix of the most outrageous and astonishing acts ever to be seen on stage.
This non-stop show is packed with thrilling and sophisticated magic of unprecedented proportions.
Audiences will witness stunning acts of grand illusion, levitation, mind-reading,
disappearance and for the first time
ever in history, a full view water torture
escape. This group of world-class performers take their cue from the showmanship
of the great illusionists of the past - such as Harry Houdini – and pair it with a
new and updated contemporary aesthetic,
whose set and costume design lend the genre
a theatricality and artistry that has rarely been seen before.
Collectively,
these performers have been seen by millions of people around the world and this
production showcases
their incredible talents together on stage for the very first time.
This event is booked at the historic Fox Theatre, and tickets will sell out fast!
We recommend interested groups buy tickets
early.
If there is enough interest it's possible that the committee might be able to arrange
groups transportation. If you are interested in being added to a group email list for those planning to attend this show,
contact Heather Phillips via email.
