Convergence
          XXIV Detroit

So why Come to Detroit?

Location and History

Detroit is ideal in being centrally located within the continental United States. It also directly shares a border with Canada. This makes travel time and cost from most American states, and our neighbor to the north, relatively inexpensive. This is a benefit to travelers of all walks of life. However Detroit also has a lot to offer Goths in particular. The city of Detroit, and it’s people, have had a long and turbulent history. It has seen many dark times, and some parts of the city are the very definition of “urban decay.” All of this has lead to the development of a city culture, and general atmosphere, that embraces darkness. Detroit is the home of Devil’s Night. And this ambiance has made Detroit the ideal setting for such literary works as The Virgin Suicides, and The Rosary Murders, as well as such dark films as It Follows, Only Lovers Left Alive, and of course..The Crow. Well of course The Crow took place here, what other city would do?

One manifestation of this gothic outlook is Detroit’s own personal demon, known as the Nain Rouge. French for “Red Dwarf,” the Nain Rouge is a celebrated figure of the city’s folklore that dates to the early 1700s. He is a short, red-skinned devil like creature that is said to be a harbinger of doom. He is reputed to have appeared during major disasters in Detroit’s history, and certainly represents the city of Detroit at its most gothic. We have therefor adopted the Nain Rouge as the Detroit Convergence XXIV mascot!

Local Goth Community

In addition to its dark history and Lore, Detroit has a great deal to offer as the host city to Convergence. It has a sizable and long standing Goth community. There are also well established Goth populations in other Michigan cities, such as AnnArbor, Flint, Kalamazoo, and Lansing that would readily come to a Detroit hosted Convergence. This offers a solid base for a well attended event. Links and information will be added to this page over time. Check back frequently for updates!
