Travel

Las Vegas is one of the cheapest airfare destinations in the United States. Currently 24 commercial airlines serve Las Vegas, with numerous other charter airlines offering even more heavily discounted fares. If you are coming from outside the U.S., please be sure to read our information found HERE on what to expect. Holding C8 in Las Vegas will allow more people to reach Convergence for less money than destinations on either Coast.

In order to make it even easier on the pocketbook, we have arranged with AmericaWest Airlines for Convergence 8 attendees to receive between 5-10% off their regularly priced airfare to and from Las Vegas. Getting to and from the airport to the hotels is cheap and easy. McCarran International Airport offers many choices of ground travel, both public and private. It's possible to take a limousine or shuttle from the airport to hotels on the Strip for only $4, making a quick getaway very affordable. Some sample airfares can be found below. These are, of course, subject to change between now and 2002 and are included to provide a comparison with airfares to other bid cities.

Las Vegas is likewise served by Amtrak, making a Convergence by train an atmospheric and less-hurried option. Trains serving Las Vegas are often the very comfortable Superliners which offer a two-level sightseeing car, sleeping accommodations in various classes, dining, movies, and local guides. Even the coach seats recline for sleeping. One such train, the Southwest Chief, serves Chicago - Los Angeles stopping in Kansas City and other smaller towns on the way. In August of 2001, a ticket from Chicago to Las Vegas on the Southwest Chief was $279.00 round trip. This did not include any sleeping accommodations or trips to the dining car.

Las Vegas is also served by Greyhound. While not as luxurious as travel by train, Greyhound buses are almost always faster and cheaper than traveling with Amtrak. For those who would prefer to drive ala "Fear and Loathing", Las Vegas is served by several Interstates and Highways. Below are some sample distances from major cities to Las Vegas.

Public Transport is available in Las Vegas in the form of buses. The local bus service is Citizens Area Transit and service is provided from 5:30am to 1:30am on most routes. The fare is $1.25 to $2.00 depending on the route. Many times, for shorter hops, it will be just as convienent and cheap to share a cab.

There are free Monorails between certain hotels. A way to keep cool *and* have fun!

Taxis are plentiful. A cab ride to and from McCarran Airport to the hotels on the strip should run between $9 and $13.00, not including the tip. Be aware that using the "tunnel" that connects the airport to the strip can add $3-$5 to your fare. In the city, fares begin at $2.20, and are $1.60 for every mile thereafter (20 cents for each 1/8 mile). There is a $1.20 airport surcharge. The charge for waiting time is 35 cents a minute.
